[On his new album, Saints, Marc Ribot breaks away from his current ensemble, Cubanos Positizos, and his sideman roles, and gets back to his jazz and avant-garde roots. Ribot performs a mixture of jazz standards, blues, and traditional songs, plus avant-garde compositions from Albert Ayler and John Zorn, which he twists and bends to his own vision. The treatments range from his meditative, oriental-sounding version of the title piece (by Ayler), to the extended techniques on Zorn's "Book of Heads #13," the noise of "Empty," and a slow, beautiful version of the Beatle's "Happiness is a Warm Gun." - Alan Lankin]

Stacey Kent hear Dreamsville

Sultry singer Stacey Kent's new album, Dreamsville (Candid hear sound samples ), is a collection of romantic ballads, including standards from the American songbook by George & Ira Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, van Heusen & Burke, Henri Mancini, Johnny Mandel & Dave Frishberg and others. She has a beautiful and sweet, almost innocent, voice with a whispery vibrato and excellent diction. She doesn't shout, but uses subtlety to get into the heart of a song.

The title of the album is descriptive, with songs dealing with dreams, memory and past romance. She's backed on the album by a talented quintet, including husband Jim Tomlinson on tenor sax, clarinet and flute, Colin Oxley on guitar and David Newton on piano. They each get some nice solo space on several of the tunes. Coming off a well-received three week run in her native New York's Oak Room, this is a good opportunity to hear this exciting, young, expat singer in person. She'll be backed at Zanzibar by a group including Tomlinson and Oxley. (Alan Lankin)
