Cuong Vu
Satoko Fujii
Satoko Fujii Quartet and
Cuong Vu Ensemble

— This double bill starts with trumpeter Cuong Vu's trio with bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Joe Tomino. Taking a break from his current tour with the Pat Metheny Group, Vu emits a groove of Milesian ambient electric sounds on his recent CDs Come Play With Me (Knitting Factory) and Pure (Knitting Factory) hear sound samples.

— Pianist and composer Satoko Fujii performs with her striking, high energy quartet that includes trumpeter and frequent collaborator Natsuki Tamura, bassist Takeharu Hayakawa and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, the leader of the Japanese avant-rock group, Ruins. The group's playing on their recent album, Vulcan (Libra), is often fierce and driving, but still manages to keep a lyrical, melodic center. Other recent CDs from Fujii are April Shower (Buzz) hear sound samples and Toward To West (Enja) hear sound samples
