.
— Pianist and composer Satoko Fujii performs with
her striking, high energy quartet that includes trumpeter and frequent collaborator Natsuki Tamura,
bassist Takeharu Hayakawa and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, the leader of the Japanese avant-rock group, Ruins. The group's playing on their recent album,
Vulcan (Libra), is often fierce and driving, but still manages to keep a lyrical,
melodic center.

Karrin Allyson
— Allyson's new release,
In Blue
(Concord Jazz), is
an excellent program of blues-related songs, with an interesting choice of material.
Allison's singing style isn't bombastic,
but expressive, emotionally satisfying and mature. She’s not just a “diva” standing out
front—she sings and
interacts with the band.
She understands and expresses a song’s lyrics and has a sense of humor.
In Blue is one of this year’s best vocal albums.

Now a Philly expatriate living in Los Angeles, guitarist/composer/producer
Skip Heller's new album,
Homegoing, returns to his journeyman days in the early 1980s as a guitarist in Philadelphia, where he played weddings, gigged in bars with organ trios and worked with musicians such as Heath Allen and Uri Caine.
Homegoing merges his early influences into a hommage to his Philly days.
