The Vandermark 5
— Led by reed player Ken Vandermark and featuring his tunes,
V5's most recent releases are
Acoustic Machine
and
Free Jazz Classics
and the upcoming release
Airports For Light (all on Atavistic).
Chicago-based reed player Ken Vandermark brings his pianoless quintet,
The Vandermark 5, back to Philly.
With a three-horn lineup of trombone (Jeb Bishop) and two reeds (Vandermark and Dave Rempis), plus bassist Kent Kessler and drummer Tim Daisy, Vandermark gets a rich sound on his compositions. The tunes feature a potent mixture of composition and improvisation, inside and outside playing, up-tempo tunes and ballads. Vandermark plays in
numerous groups—the Vandermark 5 may be the most fun to watch.

Carla Cook is an excellent singer-elegant, soulful and very musical,
whether singing standards, originals or more recent R&B or rock tunes. For example, on her most recent album,
Simply Natural (MaxJazz
),
she sings a beautiful arrangement of Simon & Garfunkel's
"Scarborough Fair." That album, recorded with a piano trio, emphasized her more lyrical side, while her previous album,
Dem Bones (MaxJazz
),
showed off her more "instrumental" side, adding her voice to a trio of trombones.

Sex Mob
—
Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St, Philadelphia
Apr 5 (Sat)
— 8 pm — $22 (members: $11)
For tonight's visit to the Painted Bride, the New York-based musical group
Sex Mob will be performing
Modern Myth: The Music of
Little Richard,
Duke Ellington and
John Barry and original music based on the writings of
James Ellroy.
Sex Mob is led by slide trumpeter
Steve Bernstein
and on their most recent release,
Sex Mob Does Bond
(Ropeadope
),
they combined the New York downtown scene's interest in exploding musical boundaries and
Bernstein's experience as an arranger for movies. The CD was a tribute to
John Barry and his scores for the early
James Bond movies. The music turned out to be more homage than pastiche and had an orchestral
feel—mainly due to guest artist
John Medeski and the large range of sounds he gets on the Hammond organ. The regular
musicians—saxophonist
Briggan Krauss, bassist
Tony Scherr and drummer
Kenny Wollesen—add
their improvisations and skillful playing to the wild reimaginings.

On tour for last year's release, Zipa Buka (Zipa Music), the Jessica Lurie Ensemble lands in Mt. Airy tonight. On Zipa Buka the Ensemble performs a fun and exciting, high-energy mixture of precision-played jazz, Balkan odd-metered melodies, blues, free jazz, blues and even rock. For this tour, the ensemble includes guitarist Khabu Young, bassist Reuben Radding and drummer Timothy Ouigley.
In addition to her ensemble, skillful alto saxophonist
Jessica Lurie performs with other groups including the Living Daylights trio and the all-woman Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet. Originally from Seattle, she moved to Brooklyn about a year ago.
