Carla Cook
Zanzibar Blue, Broad & Walnut Sts, Philadelphia — 215.732.4500
Mar 28-29 (Fri-Sat) — 9 & 11 pm — $20

Carla Cook is an excellent singer-elegant, soulful and very musical, whether singing standards, originals or more recent R&B or rock tunes. For example, on her most recent album, Simply Natural (MaxJazz hear sound samples), she sings a beautiful arrangement of Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair." That album, recorded with a piano trio, emphasized her more lyrical side, while her previous album, Dem Bones (MaxJazz hear sound samples), showed off her more "instrumental" side, adding her voice to a trio of trombones.

Sex Mob
Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St, Philadelphia
Apr 5 (Sat) — 8 pm — $22 (members: $11)

For tonight's visit to the Painted Bride, the New York-based musical group Sex Mob will be performing Modern Myth: The Music of Little Richard, Duke Ellington and John Barry and original music based on the writings of James Ellroy. hear/buy: Sex Mob Does Bond

Sex Mob is led by slide trumpeter Steve Bernstein and on their most recent release, Sex Mob Does Bond (Ropeadope hear sound samples), they combined the New York downtown scene's interest in exploding musical boundaries and Bernstein's experience as an arranger for movies. The CD was a tribute to John Barry and his scores for the early James Bond movies. The music turned out to be more homage than pastiche and had an orchestral feel—mainly due to guest artist John Medeski and the large range of sounds he gets on the Hammond organ. The regular musicians—saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen—add their improvisations and skillful playing to the wild reimaginings.    ALAN LANKIN
